Pictures and Postcards, Old and New Market Square
Along the High Street: A picture showing the Town Hall - far left: It was built in c1787 by the Duke of Devonshire.
According to G. Hall: On the ground floor was a room for the reception of debtors & a residence for the gaoler; the person who takes care of the market stalls also lives in the gaoler's apartments. The second floor had a large room for holding the sessions & a small anti-room for magistrates.

The white 'Greaves'

was demolished to make Tontine Road; Tontine Road
was demolished & it's now a pedestrianised zone leading to the library & shopping precinct.
