Market  Hall

The Market Hall was built in 1857 by the Chesterfield Market Company at a total cost of £13,350. It was officially opened on Wednesday 13th 1857; the first stone having been laid 18th January 1856.

The clock, which was said to have cost about £500, was from the Duke of Devonshire; and was set going on Wednesday 19th June 1867. It was constructed by Mr. Elleby of Ashbourne. Only one face was lighted – The Chesterfield Gas Company did it for free.

Although the decision to buy the Market Hall from the Chesterfield Market Company, by the Chesterfield Corporation, was made in 1870  it wasn't until 1873, when it changed hands, for  £15,000.

The Market Hall was given a new top made of fibreglass in the 1980's; & has been re-structured & re-furbished most significantly in 1979 & 2013.

The first of my post cards.

'Scales & Salter' are still on the corner of  the High Street & Glumangate - opposite the bank.

Changes, the back & the front.
The inside has changed drastically too.
